Common Terms and Acronyms

Health and Human Services (HHS)

Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA)

The former name for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. For more information visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

An act introduced in 1996 to improve portability and continuity of health insurance coverage in the group and individual markets; to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in health insurance and health care delivery; to promote the use of medical savings accounts; to improve access to long-term care services and coverage; to simplify the administration of health insurance; and for other purposes.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

A health plan that provides comprehensive health care to voluntarily enrolled individuals. The primary purpose of an HMO is to coordinate care. TRICARE Prime is like an HMO option.

Health Net Federal Services, LLC (HNFS)

A subsidiary of Health Net, Inc. and the managed care support contractor for the TRICARE North Region.

Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)

A set of health care codes based on the American Medical Association's Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®). HCPCS generally refer to non-physician services such as ambulance services, prosthetic devices, equipment, and supplies.
