Common Terms and Acronyms

Fiscal Year (FY)

A financial year determined for calculating financial statements. The FY for TRICARE benefits begins on October 1st and continues through September 30th of the following year.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

A government agency within the Department of Health and Human Services responsible for protecting the public health. Visit the FDA website for more information.

Foreign Identification Number (FIN)

A permanent identification number assigned to foreign military members by the appropriate national embassy. The number resembles a Social Security number and most often starts with six or nine.

Fraud and Abuse, Health Care

Fraud is when a provider or beneficiary does something with the intent to get payment for services he or she did not perform or receive, such as submitting a false claim.

Abuse is the improper or excessive use of program benefits, resources or services by providers or beneficiaries.
